Poised on the spur of the towering snow peaked mountains of the Dhauladhar, Kangra Art Museum commands a majestic view of Dharamshala town settled down below. Not denying that Dharamshala, in itself is a nature's showcase of one of the richest archaeological sites of Himachal Pradesh, with its finest specimens now being preserved in the museum, for the advantage of tourists, scholars and the visitors. The region of Kangra (especially the Banganga Valley) has yielded scores of pebbles, choppers, uni-facial and bi-facial tools indicating that the early man lived here as hunter and food gatherer by the side of springs and lakes where animals flocked for water. A dense forest around them provided the necessary swinging from tree to tree. Because of its proximity to the plains and conditions idyllic for spiritual practices, the region of Kangra since then, has had a strong hold of many religions and faiths .This makes Kangra the only region in Himachal Pradesh where the sculptures from Hindu, Buddhist and Jaina cult are found in large numbers. Some best examples are on display in the museum.
